New event and faster matches: players name their desired changes for patch 7.42

Following the conclusion of The International 2026, the Dota 2 community is awaiting the game's next major update. Patch 7.41 was released back in March, while the subsequent lettered updates were primarily focused on balancing heroes and items.

Expectations for patch 7.42 are now considerably higher. Members of the professional scene and the community want to see not only another round of balance changes but also new content. The main requests include a separate in-game event, new mechanics, shorter matches, an economy rework, and a meta update.

New event and possible mechanics

One of those hoping to see new content in the next major update is Shannon SUNSfan Scotten. Even before TI15, the commentator said on the We Say Things podcast that he hoped to see a new hero and a separate in-game event similar to Aghanim's Labyrinth.

In addition, SUNSfan suggested expanding Invoker's Aghanim's Scepter upgrade concept to other heroes. Under his idea, heroes could receive several development options and choose between them directly during a match.

After patch 7.41 was released, dataminers also discovered references to a potential Deity's Blessings mechanic in the Dota 2 files. According to the discovered information, players could choose one of nine blessings with different permanent effects before a match. Valve has not announced or commented on this system so far.

At the same time, The International 2026 champion Ilya Yatoro Mulyarchuk previously suggested that the developers could introduce a new mechanic to replace the removed facets in the new patch. In his opinion, Valve also needs to even out hero balance: for some characters, former facets effectively became part of their innate abilities, while for others, innate abilities were formed from mechanics of existing abilities.

Reducing match duration

Another major expectation for patch 7.42 is faster matches. A total of 148 games lasting more than 115 hours combined were played at The International 2026, while the longest game lasted 94 minutes and 38 seconds. More detailed tournament statistics can be found here.

After the tournament, Team Liquid Technical Director Ben Noxville Steenhuisen also addressed this topic. The analyst drew attention to the size of the map and the large amount of available resources. In his opinion, additional objectives can create more opportunities for fights, but the current map also gives teams too much space to farm safely.

Noxville also believes that neutral items still involve too much randomness, while some of them allow heroes to compensate for weaknesses in a draft.

Some items should be significantly nerfed or removed. For example, gold per minute, which is sometimes taken even on core heroes, could be removed. It would also be good to either make the map smaller or add more objectives for teams to fight over. This would add more activity to the game.

Even a significant gold advantage does not always allow a team to quickly end a match. The losing side can defend the high ground with Glyph of Fortification, buybacks, and defensive abilities, while the leading team is often better off continuing to build its advantage rather than risking a push into the enemy base.

Commentator Alexey Bafik Bafadarov also suggested changing the buyback system. In his opinion, the number of buybacks available to each hero should be limited to reduce their impact on lengthy matches. Esports player Alexander TORONTOTOKYO Khertek expressed a similar idea and suggested setting a limit of three or five buybacks per hero per game.

Among the solutions discussed by the community are nerfing Glyph, reducing the amount of gold and the number of neutral camps, and increasing the value of kills compared to passive farming.

Another proposed way to speed up matches is to reduce heroes' overall survivability. Lower health, armor, and magic resistance could make fights more dynamic and increase the value of successful initiations.

Hero Balance

Former professional player Quinn Quinn Callahan shared his wishlist. He suggested significantly nerfing several heroes that he considers among the strongest in the current meta.

Remove Aghanim's Scepter from Lone Druid. Make the bear cost 400 mana. Remove Bounty Hunter's invisibility and Invoker's Aghanim's Shard, while Earth Spirit should lose five base damage. I would even say eight.

Some of his concerns are supported by current high-MMR match statistics. According to recent Dota2ProTracker data, Bounty Hunter has won 56.7% of his matches in position four, Earth Spirit has a win rate of around 53.1% in the mid lane, while Invoker sits at 52.3%. Among the heroes that need buffs instead, Callahan named Silencer, Wraith King, Phantom Assassin, Anti-Mage, Bloodseeker, Leshrac, and Omniknight.

Changes to the economy and map objectives

Players are also paying particular attention to the support economy. The large amount of available resources allows support heroes to purchase several defensive items more quickly. In the late game, teams gain numerous tools to save their allies, making it even more difficult to close out matches.

However, this does not mean returning to a meta where losing a single fight at the 20-25-minute mark almost guaranteed the loss of a team's base. The main idea is that advantages in map control, kills, and gold should translate into secured objectives more quickly.

The changes could also expand the pool of viable heroes. At the biggest tournament of the year, Treant Protector was picked or banned in all 148 games, while Earth Spirit and Hoodwink were also highly prioritized. Meanwhile, some traditional carry heroes almost completely disappeared from the professional meta.

Valve has yet to officially announce patch 7.42 or reveal its release date. Judging by discussions among professional players, analysts, and the community, the main expectations are faster matches, changes to the economy and neutral items, a refreshed meta, and new content.
