Bio
Ian Nepomnyashchy (also known as FrostNova in the cybersports community) is a Russian chess player, grandmaster, cybersports player and streamer. He has twice participated in World Chess Championship matches (2021, 2023), European Champion (2010) and World Blitz Chess Champion (2024), shared 1st place with Magnus Carlsen.
Ian was born in Bryansk on July 14, 1990. He learned to play chess at the age of 5. At school he played flight simulators, and later started playing DotA. As a member of TheRetry he won ASUS Cup Winter 2011.
In addition to appearing in DotA and chess tournaments, Ian has participated in highlighting of The International 2015, ESL One Hamburg 2018 and other major events.
In 2019, as part of the community cast studio "Starper Hub". Nepomnyashchy took part in a chess showmatch. He blindly beat four players (Yaroslav NS Kuznetsov, Andrey Dread Golubev, Sergey Smile Revin and Kirill Cake Zabrodin) simultaneously. Later, Ian also appeared on "Starper Hub" as a commentator and co-host.
In November 2024, FrostNova participated in BetBoom Streamers Battle 8 as a roster member of Team Goodwin, where he finished in 5th place. And in February 2025 he took part in BetBoom Streamers Battle 9 as a roster member of IVPGG and finished in 6th place. Also in February it was announced that Jan signed a contract with Aurora Gaming and will represent the club at chess tournaments.
