Valve has released the large-scale in-game event "The Dark Carnival", which will serve as the main event leading up to The International 2026. The update introduces a new story campaign, a comic exploring the event's lore, unique rewards, and five Automaton Personas for heroes.

The event is divided into three acts. The first act launched on June 25, the second will become available on July 10, and the third on July 24. Each act features two reward train cars. In the first chapter, players can explore the Prison Car and the Foundry Car, containing a total of 38 free rewards.

The event revolves around the interactive Magister's Train map, where players progress by earning special tickets through Dota 2 matches. The type of tickets received depends on the hero they choose.

According to the story, players must guide Hoodwink and Legion Commander through Ringmaster's circus train to rescue the imprisoned Axe.

By completing the event, players can earn a treasure containing 15 carnival-themed sets, Candyworks candies, discount coins for The Dark Carnival shop, loading screens, sprays, emoticons, and four exclusive bundles for Invoker, Magnus, Crystal Maiden, and Phantom Assassin.

In addition, Valve introduced the paid "Secret Rooms Bundle", priced at $14.99. It unlocks additional story paths, exclusive creeps, the event's soundtrack, and access to extra rewards.

Alongside the event launch, five new Automaton Personas were added for Axe, Bristleback, Legion Commander, Morphling, and Oracle. Each Persona features a new character model, unique animations, visual effects, updated ability icons, and new voice lines. Each Persona is priced at $14.99.

The event closely resembles Crownfall, where players also progressed through a story campaign by playing different Dota 2 heroes. At the same time, Valve may still release a separate Compendium dedicated to The International 2026 closer to the tournament's start.

Last year's edition included loading screens, profile banners, Dota Plus rewards, and bonuses for accurate match predictions during the championship.

Previously, Cyberscore covered a podcast featuring Austin Cap Walsh and Avery SVG Silverman, in which the analysts discussed what they believe is the biggest problem facing The International.
