When will the "Dark Carnival" Act 2 and Patch 7.42 be released?

On 30 September, Valve began actively updating the Dota 2 staging and experimental servers, which is one of the main signs that a major update is coming soon.

First and foremost, the release of the second act of the "Dark Carnival" is expected; the developers announced its continuation in the third chapter of the event’s first act back in the summer. It can take anywhere from a week to a month from the start of the test server updates until the content appears in the game. Given the similarity between the "Dark Carnival" and the Halloween theme, Valve may time the second part of the event to coincide with this holiday and release the update closer to 31 October.

It is worth noting that the release of a major in-game event is unlikely to coincide with a Tier 1 tournament due to the high risk of crashes, server overload, and critical bugs. The same cannot be said for gameplay updates – developers often release them right in the middle of competitions.

We can also expect the release of 7.42 this year, as Valve traditionally releases two major patches a year. Furthermore, more than half a year has passed since the release of 7.41, and it has already become one of the longest-running patches in history.

In recent years, the developers have often released major gameplay updates in the intervals between stages of the DreamLeague series tournaments. Patch 7.41 was not released during a DreamLeague event, but whilst the championship organised by the same tournament operator — ESL One Birmingham 2026 — was taking place.

The next major Dota 2 tournament from ESL — DreamLeague Season 30 — will be held from 02.12.2026 to 13.12.2026. Based on the release dates of previous major updates, patch 7.42 is expected to be released during this timeframe.

It is also worth considering the possibility that the second act of the "Dark Carnival" and version 7.42 might be released on the same day. However, this is a rather pessimistic prediction, as Valve is unlikely to combine a truly major event with a patch containing significant gameplay changes into a single release. If the continuation of the event and the game update do indeed take place simultaneously, this could mean there will be no radical changes in the patch or no long-awaited PvE event in the "Dark Carnival".

As CyberScore previously reported, Dota 2 saw a drop of 7.4 per cent in its average concurrent players in September.
