The International 2017 champion Ivan Mind_Control Ivanov gave his first major interview since becoming the head coach of REKONIX, where he spoke about the reasons behind ending his playing career, working with his new team, qualifying for Esports World Cup 2026, and the upcoming road to The International 2026.

According to Ivanov, the decision to step away from professional play had been developing for a long time. He admitted that after winning TI7, it became increasingly difficult for him to find the motivation to continue competing.

After TI, I kept trying to return to my previous level, but the results were no longer the same. At some point, I realized I was tired of constantly fighting and not achieving what I expected from myself.

Speaking about his transition into coaching, Mind_Control said that he wanted to stay involved in the game and continue using the experience he had accumulated, but in a different role.

I realized that I still love Dota and want to remain a part of the scene. Coaching seemed like the best way for me to pass my experience on to other players.

REKONIX became the first team of his coaching career. According to Ivanov, he was attracted by the roster's potential and the opportunity to work with young players from Southeast Asia.

There are many talented players in this region. I liked their attitude toward the game, their dedication and their desire to improve. I saw a team that I can genuinely help become stronger.

At the moment, the coach is focused on improving team communication, preparing drafts and helping the squad make better in-game decisions.

It is worth noting that REKONIX successfully qualified for Esports World Cup 2026 in Southeast Asia after defeating Team Glyph in the grand final. The coach spoke positively about the team's performance but urged fans not to set expectations too high ahead of the summer's biggest tournament.

If we look at it realistically, a top-6 finish at EWC would be a great result for us. I see this team among the top six participants at the tournament. But in Dota, anything can happen, so I do not want to limit the team in advance or create additional pressure.

The coach also shared his thoughts on the upcoming qualification for The International 2026. In his opinion, the event always features a high level of competition regardless of the participating teams.

Qualification for this tournament is always different from other competitions, and we will have to work very hard to secure a slot.

REKONIX's next appearance will be in the closed qualifiers for TI15, scheduled to take place from 19.06.2026 to 23.06.2026.

The Dota 2 tournament at Esports World Cup 2026 will be held from 06.07.2026 to 18.07.2026. A total of 24 teams will compete for a $2,000,000 prize pool.

Earlier, Cyberscore reported on the cheating issues in the South American region highlighted by Team Nemesis coach Felipe Astini Astini.
