Warlock counterpicks: who to choose against this hero in Dota 2
Warlock is an intelligence ranged hero. He possesses powerful spells capable of turning the tide of battle. He can slow down enemies, heal allies, and deal area-of-effect damage. His ultimate, Chaotic Offering, summons golems that not only deal damage upon landing but also stun enemies. Thanks to his abilities, Warlock is most commonly played as a support, but depending on the situation, he can also appear in the mid lane.
| Advantages of Warlock | Disadvantages of Warlock |
| Powerful crowd control and high area damage | Reliance on ultimate cooldown and positioning |
| Ability to heal allies | Low mobility |
| Effective in team fights | Abilities require a large amount of mana |
Good picks against Warlock are heroes who:
- Possess strong control abilities
- Have high resistance to slows
- Can quickly neutralize him before he casts his ultimate
Some of the best heroes against Warlock:
- Slark – Pounce allows Slark to quickly reach Warlock and escape from Upheaval, while Dark Pact removes debuffs. With Shadow Dance, Slark can safely withstand attacks from the golems and take them down. Moreover, his high attack speed lets him eliminate the ultimate golems faster and retreat if necessary.
- Storm Spirit – Storm Spirit counters Warlock with his high mobility, as positioning is critical for Warlock during fights. Ball Lightning enables Storm Spirit to instantly close the gap and initiate on Warlock, denying him the chance to use his abilities. Electric Vortex provides control, and his high magical damage can quickly kill Warlock.
- Silencer – Global Silence completely disables Warlock’s abilities, preventing their use. Silencer also drains Warlock’s intelligence, reducing his maximum mana and making it harder for him to cast his expensive spells. Arcane Curse and Last Word make Warlock's life even more difficult, applying silence and dealing damage whenever Warlock uses spells.
Other effective heroes against Warlock include Broodmother, Huskar, Weaver, Nature's Prophet, Ursa, Troll Warlord, Lifestealer, Bristleback, Phantom Lancer, Void Spirit, Riki, Legion Commander, Shadow Fiend, Lycan, Sniper, Anti-Mage.
Items effective against Warlock:
- Boots of Bearing – counters slows and provides extra attack speed to destroy golems.
- Orchid Malevolence/Bloodthorn – applies silence to disable abilities.
- Black King Bar/Pipe of Insight/Eternal Shroud/Mage Slayer – protects against magical damage.
- Force Staff/Hurricane Pike/Blink Dagger – helps escape golem attacks or quickly reach Warlock.
- Assault Cuirass/Shiva’s Guard/Crimson Guard – reduces physical damage from golems.
- Guardian Greaves/Glimmer Cape/Eul’s Scepter of Divinity/Wind Waker – provide additional saves.
- Dust of Appearance/Sentry Ward – counters potential Glimmer Cape purchases.
How to counter Warlock:
Early Game:
In the early game, Warlock often tries to harass enemy creep waves using Fatal Bonds and then pulls his creeps toward a nearby jungle camp. To counter this, block neutral camps near the lane. Avoid standing too close to creeps to reduce the damage from this ability.
Be mindful that once Warlock reaches level 6, he may start ganking other lanes or focus on destroying the first tower. Always keep a Town Portal Scroll ready to assist or escape when needed.
Mid Game:
Control Warlock at the start of fights to prevent him from effectively using his abilities. In team fights, focus on quickly killing the golems to give your team an advantage. Ideally, eliminate Warlock before the fight even begins.
Warlock becomes stronger after acquiring Aghanim’s Shard, which upgrades his Upheaval ability to summon demons that explode and deal additional damage.
Late Game:
In the late game, Warlock becomes especially dangerous with items like Aghanim’s Scepter and Refresher Orb. Normally, his ultimate summons one golem, but with Aghanim’s Scepter, it summons two weaker ones. However, using Refresher Orb will summon up to four golems, which can be a significant problem.
Avoid extended fights, as Warlock can heal allies and deal massive damage to enemies. Always focus him before the fight begins, as his golems remain a threat even after his death.
