The International 2025: The Phenomenon of Shadow Fiend’s Success in the Hands of Pro Players

Shadow Fiend became one of the most successful heroes at The International 2025. In the first days of the tournament, he was picked 9 times, and only once did it not lead to a victory. Thus, the hero shows an incredible win rate of 88%.

The greatest success was demonstrated by Xtreme Gaming, which picked Shadow Fiend for its mid player Go Xm Huncheng three times, winning each series. Team Spirit, Aurora Gaming and Tidebound picked him twice each, showing how differently the hero’s potential can be realized.

At the end of the first stage of the tournament, SF recorded a 63% win rate. Other teams also noted the hero’s versatility, but not all managed to deliver a solid performance.

A special highlight was delivered to fans by Team Spirit’s carry Ilya Yatoro Mulyarchuk, who scored the first rampage of the tournament on Shadow Fiend in a match against Wildcard. This moment became a symbolic confirmation that the hero can deal massive damage in seconds. Here’s a replay of that moment:

Why Shadow Fiend is so strong in the The International 2025 meta

The hero’s main advantage is his versatility. He can perform multiple roles and adapt to the team’s strategy:

  • Carry with a physical build: choosing the Lasting Presence facet gives the hero additional armor reduction on enemies after a kill. Combined with damage items, this makes him extremely dangerous in extended fights.
  • Mid with a magical build: the Shadowmire facet slows enemies with Shadowraze, allowing Shadow Fiend to dominate the lane. In this style, he becomes a powerful nuker capable of quickly eliminating supports and causing chaos in fights with his ultimate.
  • Hybrid build: a combination of magic and physical damage. This build appears more often in the tournament meta, offering flexibility and making the hero useful at any stage of the game.

Another strength of the hero is his high farming speed. Thanks to Shadowraze and his armor-reducing aura, including on creeps, Shadow Fiend clears neutral camps faster than most heroes. This allows him to reach key items more quickly and dictate the tempo of the game.

Hero Builds and Timings

Carry build with Lasting Presence facet

In the carry role, players on Shadow Fiend always choose the Lasting Presence facet. This makes the hero extremely dangerous on the lane with a strong support and in prolonged fights. With this aspect, it's important to accumulate as many stacks of armor reduction as possible, as it doesn't last indefinitely, and early on, this forces an aggressive playstyle, constantly aiming for kills to refresh stacks and amplify damage against opponents. Some "boosters" specifically select the Lasting Presence facet and, due to a strong lane, consistently eliminate enemy heroes. In such cases, the total armor reduction against enemies can reach up to -20, and with such colossal damage, the game sets an incredibly fast pace, often determining the match's outcome early on.

A typical carry build for Shadow Fiend starts with Wraith Band, Magic Stick, and Power Treads, often assembling Falcon Blade for health, damage, and mana regeneration. By the 12-minute mark, Mask of Madness is purchased, followed by Dragon Lance or Yasha by the 16th minute, then Hurricane Pike and Manta Style (or Sange and Yasha if status resistance is needed, e.g., against Doom). A key item in the mid-game is Black King Bar, sometimes purchased earlier if opponents are setting a high tempo. By mid-game, it's also crucial to have damage items like Daedalus or Butterfly, and the final item in the late game becomes Satanic.

Magical mid build with Shadowmire facet

In the mid lane, the Shadowmire facet is typically chosen, allowing Shadow Fiend to control the lane and set the game's tempo. Starting items always include Bottle, Magic Stick, and Power Treads, with Yasha for quick farming or Blink Dagger for team fights by the 12-minute mark.

Next, Yasha Kaya is commonly purchased, accelerating ability casting, making Shadowraze and the ultimate Requiem of Souls nearly instantaneous. Around the 23-minute mark, it's important to acquire Black King Bar against crowd control or Aghanim's Scepter, which enhances the ultimate and adds healing. In mid-game, Refresher Orb is often bought for maximum damage, and in the late game, Scythe of Vyse for control. Notably, Aghanim's Shard is purchased, which reduces the cooldown of Shadowraze upon hitting an enemy, increasing the hero's effectiveness in fights.

Utilizing Shadowmire makes Shadow Fiend particularly strong early in the game, allowing for lane dominance and active participation in early team fights.

Power at All Stages

Early Game

Shadow Fiend almost always feels confident on the lane. His Shadowraze ability allows him not only to last-hit creeps from a distance but also to deal significant damage to enemies. With his long attack range, the hero can control the lane and prevent the opposing carry from farming. If the opponent plays too aggressively, a few successful Shadowrazes can lead to an easy kill. Collected souls also grant bonus physical damage, making last-hitting creeps even easier.

Mid Game

At this stage, SF reveals his full potential. With a magical build, the hero becomes a powerful initiator: the slow from Shadowmire combined with damage from Shadowraze and the ultimate Requiem of Souls can literally erase most heroes in seconds. With a physical damage build, by this point he has key items (like Black King Bar and Daedalus), making him one of the team’s strongest fighting units.

Late Game

In the late game, Shadow Fiend turns into a true killing machine. His damage from attacks and spells is enhanced by the level 25 talent, which allows Shadowraze to deal additional attack damage. This makes every ability combo lethal even against the tankiest heroes. Another strong point of the hero is his ability to quickly clear creep waves and control the map. If the game enters a prolonged stage, SF remains versatile: he can instantly kill a support or participate in long fights, dealing consistent damage across the enemy team.

Interesting Details at The International 2025

Shadow Fiend was often picked during the second stage of the draft to maintain flexibility and avoid revealing the team’s strategy. SF works especially well in combination with heroes who can provide disables or protect him: for example, Shadow Shaman and Disruptor help organize control, while Dawnbreaker or Pugna can save him in critical moments.

At the same time, there are clear counter-picks: Magnus and Vengeful Spirit can disrupt Shadow Fiend’s positioning and use abilities through BKB, while Doom, with his ultimate in the late game, completely disables Shadow Fiend’s passive abilities (if the break talent is taken), including armor reduction and soul damage, making it extremely challenging to play against him.

Thus, Shadow Fiend at The International 2025 proved to be a versatile and powerful hero, capable of dominating the lane and having a massive impact throughout the game - from early farming to mid-game and late-game stages.
