Phantom Assassin is a melee agility hero specializing in dealing serious damage to a single target thanks to the critical damage from her ultimate. Due to her abilities, such as innate evasion and critical strikes, she is one of the most dangerous carry in the game. Her main task is to eliminate key targets in the enemy team quickly. She has high mobility and can instantly close the distance to an enemy using her second ability, Phantom Strike. However, due to her low health pool and item dependency, she must carefully choose the right moments to attack and avoid unnecessary fights in the early game.

When to pick Phantom Assassin:

Phantom Assassin is an excellent choice if your team needs a carry with strong late-game potential. She performs well against heroes with low-health pools and those without strong control abilities. However, it's important to consider that she is quite vulnerable in the early stages of the game and struggles against heroes with high magical damage or disables, such as Lina, Pugna, Puck, Shadow Demon, or against heroes with high health or armor, like Dragon Knight, Terrorblade, Tiny.

It's best to pick Phantom Assassin if your team has heroes who can create space for her to farm, such as Magnus, Beastmaster, Lich.

She also struggles against heroes with illusions, like Terrorblade or Chaos Knight. You can see more about hero counterpicks here.

Features of Phantom Assassin:

  • In the early game, Stifling Dagger should be used to secure last hits on ranged creeps more easily.
  • Blur makes her silhouette fade, rendering Phantom Assassin dodge by direct enemy spells and range attacks (but remember that area of effect spells will still affect her). It also hides her from the enemy minimap (mechanically similar to Smoke of Deceit). Additionally, Blur can be used to dodge enemy projectiles if activated while the projectile is in flight (for example, you can dodge Sniper's ultimate Assassinate if you activate Blur before it hits; this also works with Smoke of Deceit).

What to build on Phantom Assassin:

  • Power Treads – increases attack and movement speed;
  • Battle Fury – accelerates farming, increases damage, and provides cleave;
  • Desolator – reduces enemy armor, increasing damage (if using the Methodical facet, Desolator is not recommended, as the facet already grants increased critical strike damage);
  • Sange and Yasha – a great alternative to Desolator, providing more damage, attack speed, health, and status resistance (reducing the duration of stuns and slows);
  • Black King Bar – protects against magical damage and disabled;
  • Satanic – grants lifesteal and increases survivability;
  • Skull Basher – good for controlling enemies and fighting strong carries;
  • Early-game items like Wraith Band and Magic Wand should not be ignored, as they provide useful stats and sustain.

How to play Phantom Assassin:

Early Game:

Focus on farming, using Stifling Dagger for last-hitting creeps and harassing enemies. Avoid unnecessary fights, as Phantom Assassin is weak in the early stages. Try to get key items like Battle Fury, Desolator, or Sange and Yasha, along with BKB, as quickly as possible.

Mid Game:

Once you have your core items, start participating more actively in fights. Use Phantom Strike to quickly eliminate supports and weaker heroes. Always activate Black King Bar immediately upon engaging in fights to avoid disables and magical damage. Maintain a high farm rate by combining fights with jungle farming.

Late Game:

Focus on low-health enemies and eliminate them with critical  attacks from Coup de Grace and pay attention to enemy heroes who are in the backline. In final team fights, quickly take down supports before switching to enemy carry. If you have Abyssal Blade, you can initiate fights against enemy carry if you can burst them down quickly or if your team can follow up. Maintain good positioning in fights, avoiding mass stuns and disables. Don't forget about Aegis of the Immortal—in the late game, it provides a crucial second life and can determine the outcome of the match.

Core gameplay principles:

Farming, survival, and choosing the right targets are the three key aspects of playing Phantom Assassin. quickly secure basic items and dominate the mid to late game. The hero is prone to quick damage, and weakens in prolonged battles. Therefore, keep your position and pay attention to recharging your abilities and items ( like Black King Bar ).
