History
Team Liquid is an esports organization from the Netherlands, founded in 2000 by Victor Nazgul Gussens. It started out as a small StarCraft: Brood War clan but eventually grew into one of the most successful esports organizations in the world.
Later, Team Liquid created the Liquipedia platform, which eventually became one of the leading encyclopedias in the world of esports.
The club unveiled its first Dota 2 roster in late 2012, signing former players from compLexity Gaming, including Kanishka Sam BuLba Sossail.
2012–2015
Team Liquid spent its early years without any major achievements on the professional scene. The organization changed its rosters several times and remained in the shadow of successful European and Chinese clubs for a long time.
The situation changed in 2015 when the club signed the 5Jungz roster, led by Kuro KuroKy Salehi Tahasomi. The new roster also included Ivan MinD_ContRoL Ivanov, Lasse MATUMBAMAN Urpalainen, Adrian FATA- Trinks, and Jesse JerAx Vainikka.
It was this roster that marked the beginning of the organization’s first truly successful era.
2016
In 2016, Team Liquid established itself among the world’s strongest teams. The squad finished second at the Shanghai Major and the Manila Major, and their best achievement of the season was winning EPICENTER 2016.
Despite consistent results, the team was still unable to win the year’s premier tournament. After The International 2016, JerAx left the roster, and his spot was taken by Maroun GH Merhej. At the same time, FATA retired as a player, and Amer Miracle- Al-Barkawi became Team Liquid’s new midlaner. It was these roster moves that would later play a key role in the organization’s history.
2017
2017 was the best season in the club’s history. The revamped roster won several major tournaments in a row, including EPICENTER 2017 and DreamLeague Season 7.
The organization’s greatest achievement was its victory at The International 2017. During the tournament, Liquid lost to Invictus Gaming in the upper bracket, but then went undefeated through the entire lower bracket and defeated Newbee 3–0 in the grand final. Team Liquid became the first team in TI history to win the tournament after advancing through the lower bracket starting from the second round.
2018–2019
After winning TI7, the team retained its championship roster and continued to regularly compete for titles at major tournaments. The team won the China Dota 2 Supermajor and MDL Macau 2019, and also reached the grand final of The International 2019.
In the TI9 finals, Liquid lost to OG, which became the first two-time champion in the tournament’s history. Almost immediately after The International, the championship roster, led by KuroKy, left the organization.
2020–2021
After the roster’s departure, the organization began rebuilding around a new European roster, signing the former Alliance lineup: Mike miCKe Wu, Max qojqva Broker, Samuel Boxi Swan, Tommy Taiga Lee, and Aiden iNSaNiA Sarkoy.
The only major victory of this period was their triumph at ESL One Germany 2020.
However, even after that, Team Liquid struggled for a long time to return to the level of success they had achieved during the TI7 era. The team regularly reached the late stages of tournaments but failed to win any new championships.
2022
Before the start of the new season, Lasse MATUMBAMAN Urpalainen returned to the team, and the organization also signed Ludwig zai Wåhlberg; with them, the team quickly returned to the ranks of the world’s strongest teams.
The season’s biggest achievement was a top-3 finish at The International 2022. Liquid qualified for the world championship through the Last Chance Qualifier and knocked out several favorites during the tournament, only being stopped in the lower bracket final by Team Secret.
However, for MATUMBAMAN, this tournament was his last. Even before it began, the player had decided to retire regardless of the outcome, and the vacant mid-lane spot was filled by Michał Nisha Jankowski, who joined the team toward the end of the year.
2023
Liquid had one of the most consistent seasons of any team in the world. Over the course of the year, the team reached the grand finals of Tier 1 tournaments five times, but each time fell just short of the championship. The team’s main rivals during that period were Gaimin Gladiators.
After the season ended, zai took a break from his professional career, and his spot was later filled by Neta 33 Shapira, who became the team’s captain.
2024
With the arrival of 33, Team Liquid finally assembled one of the strongest rosters on the modern scene. Throughout the season, the team regularly reached the late stages of major tournaments, with Team Falcons and Gaimin Gladiators remaining their main rivals.
At the end of the summer, Team Liquid won Elite League Season 2, and a month later claimed the championship at The International 2024. The team went through the entire TI playoffs without a single map loss and confidently defeated Gaimin Gladiators 3–0 in the grand final.
Team Liquid became the first organization in Dota 2 history to win The International with two different rosters.
Despite the victory, 33 decided to leave the team, and Jonas SabeRLight- Vołek, who had previously played for Shopify Rebellion and TSM, became the new offlaner.
2025
After winning TI13, Liquid continued to be one of the strongest teams in the world.
The year’s major achievements included victories at PGL Wallachia Season 3 and PGL Wallachia Season 4. In addition, the team finished in the top 3 at virtually every major tournament of the season.
However, the team failed to defend its world championship title—at The International 2025, Liquid finished outside the top 6. After the season ended, SabeRLight- left the roster, and iNSaNiA retired from competitive play.
In the fall, the organization signed Erik tOfu Angel and Marcus Ace Hoelgaard, beginning another roster overhaul.
2026
Team Liquid kicked off the new season with a victory at BLAST Slam VI, defeating Natus Vincere 3–1 in the tournament’s final.
The team also reached the grand final of PGL Wallachia Season 7, but lost to Team Yandex and finished in second place.
In the remaining tournaments of the first half of the season, Liquid consistently finished in the top 4, continuing to demonstrate a high level of play.
