How to enable FPS in Dota 2

Technical questions

Many players are wondering how to find out FPS in Dota 2. First, you need to figure out what FPS is, what it affects, and what value this parameter has for us as players. FPS – Frames per Second (frame rate). In computer games, this indicator displays the frequency (number of frames per second) with which the game’s graphics engine generates new frames and displays them on the monitor screen.

Depending on the frame rate, games can be divided into two types:

  • with variable frame rate;
  • with a constant frame rate.

If the frame rate is constant, the smoothness of the image does not depend on the power of the machine on which the game is running. In the case of insufficiently powerful equipment, the gameplay itself slows down. If such a game runs on a more productive device, it, on the contrary, will be accelerated. With a variable frame rate, the gameplay does not change its speed. However, on weak computers, in this case, a «torn» picture will appear on the screen due to the fact that frames were not generated on time.

Dota 2 is a variable frame rate game. This means that the higher the FPS, the smoother the image will be. Thanks to this, the gameplay becomes more comfortable. The minimum number of frames per second is considered to be thirty. But for professional gaming, especially in games that require fast reaction, you need an FPS of fifty, and in some cases even 100 frames per second.

How to make FPS to be displayed on the screen in Dota 2

The easiest way to enable the FPS indicator in Dota 2 is to change the game settings. For this you need to:

  • open the game;
  • open «Settings» by clicking on the button in the form of a gear;
  • go to the «Advanced settings» section;
  • put a mark in the «Display network information» checkbox.

After completing the abovementioned steps, in the upper right corner you will see information about the connection delay (ping), the degree of packet loss (loss) and the frame rate, which is the main interest to us.

The second way to enable FPS is using the console:

  • launch Steam application;
  • go to the library section with installed games;
  • find Dota 2 in the list;
  • open the «Set launch options» menu on the «General» tab;
  • enter the line «-console»;
  • start the game, then in the console that opens, write the command «cl_showfps 1».

After that, information about the current frame rate will appear on the left side of the screen.

Alternative Methods

Another solution is to install additional monitoring programs. The most common of these tools are: Fraps, FPS Monitor, CAM. This also includes software from video card manufacturers (Msi Afterburner, GeForce Experience), which, in addition to displaying FPS in real-time windows, provides information on other important parameters (temperature of the processor and video card cores, GPU and processor frequency).

Player memo

It should be remembered that you need to download third-party programs only from the official websites of the developers in order to exclude the possibility of infecting your computer with malware.
